Massachusetts Trooper Faces DUI, Drug Charges After Crash

There’s No Substitution For Experience

By Brian D. Roman, Attorney at Law

It can be frustrating to police chiefs when one of their own is accused of criminal charges such DUI and drug crimes. Unfortunately, this was the case when an off-duty Massachusetts state trooper crashed into a police car, causing injury to the trooper inside.

The car accident occurred in the early morning hours on Nov. 25 on Route 1 in Revere, less than an hour outside Attleboro. The trooper, a 19-year veteran, slammed into the back of a police car that was parked on the side of the road assisting another vehicle. The impact caused the police cruiser to rear-end the vehicle that was broken down.

All three drivers were inside their vehicles at the time of the crash. They all received injuries and were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The 43-year-old off-duty trooper faces  DUI  and drug charges. He also faces moving violations for his negligence, which included blocking an emergency vehicle. He pled not guilty and was subsequently released. However, he is barred from driving, at least until the case is over. In addition, he was forced to surrender his firearm and other police department property and was taken off duty. His next court date is Jan. 10.

Many people don’t take drunk driving seriously because it is typically considered a misdemeanor. However, intoxication is not to be taken lightly. This is especially true when a person works in the law enforcement field. Not only that, but the trooper caused injury to others, including a fellow police officer. The trooper will likely face many penalties, such as license suspension, fines, community service and rehabilitation. In addition, he could lose his job.

The trooper will need a strong defense in order to keep his job and avoid harsh penalties. As a veteran police officer, he has many years of experience in the field, which will likely help his case.
